Beavertail Prickly Pear Cactus - 3 Gallon Pot
The Opuntia basilaris, commonly known as Prickly Pear Cactus, is a North American native indigenous to the Southwest U.S. and Mexico, however can be grown year round outdoors in USDA Zones 8a to 11. It is typically found growing in arid plains and valleys within sandy or rocky soils. Pads take on an oval to roundish shape with a beautiful, soft blue-grey to greyish-green and purple skin. Its multicolored pads are a result of the presence of betacyanins pigments. The pads coloration tend to vary with changing temperatures. The exotic looking pink to magenta flowers are a sight to behold and bloom from spring to early summer. This cactus is exceptionally heat and drought tolerant and cold hardy to 10F. Otherwise, if you live in a location where temperatures drop below 10F, plant in a pot that you can overwinter indoors. Excellent for rock gardens and xeriscaping (low water needs) where it is sure to be a conversation piece. Get all the details below!
